The Hattenheim Wisselbrunnen VDP.GROSSE LAGE is one of our smaller and more valuable sites. Nestled in the middle of the vineyard rests the historic Brunnenstübchen, whose brick facade is adorned with the letters "Wisselbrunnen".
Opinions differ as to whether the name derives from a weasel, a meadow, or the Latin term "fistula" for the tube, or well.
Spoiled by the sun
The Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen VDP.GROSSE LAGE is located on the railroad line between Eltville and Hattenheim. In addition to its warm and fast-drying soils, the site also benefits from the wide Rhine River, which reflects sunlight and flows along just a few hundred meters away. About 100 meters above sea level, the grapes ripen on a fairly flat base with a slope of 10 percent. Over the warm months, they bask in the south-southwest exposed vineyard and later surprise in the glass with their clear and concentrated aromas. The soil's high water-holding capacity gives the grapes a high degree of ripeness even in dry years. The mineral potential of the limestone and marl soils and the exciting acidity round out our Grosse Gewächse from the Wisselbrunnen and make them so storable.
