Hallgarten is one of the Rheingau's high-altitude villages and is not located on the Rhine, but two kilometers to the north on a hillside. As a wine village, the village is surrounded on all sides by vineyards and offers a distant view to the south across the Rheinhessen tableland and hills to the Donnersberg, 46 kilometers away, and to the Odenwald mountain road. Another 1,500 meters north of the village, the settlement "Am Rebhang", built into the edge of the forest and surrounded by meadows and vineyards, reaches up to an altitude of 400 meters. The settlement, which today is one of the best and most exclusive residential locations in the Rheingau, was initially built in the 1970s as a sought-after location for smaller weekend cottages.
In 2020, Christian Ress moved into the property of an architect he knew well, which the architect had formerly designed for himself and his family. As a lover of good hospitality, Christian Ress henceforth uses one of the two connected houses as the Balthasar Ress Guesthouse.
The house is the perfect starting point for extensive hikes to popular Rheingau destinations such as the summit of the Hallgarter Zange (580.5 m above sea level), the wooded Kalte Herberge (619.3 m), the Mapper Schanze as the only surviving gate fortification of the Rheingau Gebück (border fortification from the 12th century) or the Eberbach Monastery. The famous "Rheinsteig" leads directly past the Rebhang settlement.
Christian Ress' partner runs a small mini donkey farm nearby, which can be visited on request and by appointment during the course of your stay.
The accommodation
The house has three bedrooms with a total of six sleeping places, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a living room and a yard with outdoor furniture and barbecue that can be used by guests. Children and dogs are welcome. A playground can be found nearby, as well as wide fields and meadows. There is no through traffic in the surrounding streets. The peace, the air and the birdsong in summer on the vineyard slope offer pure relaxation. In winter, the slopes are great for sledding when it snows.
A laundry room with a washing machine and a dryer are available for an additional fee.
Of course, an international wine selection is available in the wine fridge in the Guesthouse (billing according to consumption).
Entertainment includes a TV with HD TV with Magenta, free Netflix and Apple TV (paid movies are billed), and a Marshall jukebox.
The Balthasar Ress Guesthouse can be booked via Airbnb.
